This is very strange. I don't know much about BBQ charcoal but to my knowledge, it is not activated.

Correct me if I am wrong, your theory is to have all the small pores in activated carbon saturated with organic waste. Let bacteria grow in those pores. The effect will then be similar to live rock but better in terms of pore density and surface area.

However, normal charcoal is not very porous, it needs to be treated in hot steam (several hundred degree C steam) in an oxygen restricted environment to ACTIVATE it. The treatment will give it the porous structure.

That's why we use ACTIVATED charcoal (carbon) to absorb gaseous or liquid substance. BBQ charcoal can't do shit.

Although there is no control sample in your experiment, we trust that your fishes survive NOT because of frequent water change but of the charcoal addition. There must be other process going on instead of bacteria-in-pores theory.

Could it be the charcoal act as an additional carbon source? Like Hong Chai suggested?

Just my 2 cents and try to speculate on the theory behind.

我無講過話要active左的炭。active左仲煩，吸哂d微量元素。要死炭仲好。
我開始時無講話菌食炭係因為康仔講左，康仔寫出來前，我係同佢講過菌食炭的想法的。炭吸垃圾而比細菌食的講法係其他人的說法，唔係我講的。
至於control，我唸都唔駛啦，6升水養到幾條魚(昨晚又加多左魚)又未死，除左樂油油收銀枱附近個缸仔外，真係未見過有。
以前淨石堆，去no3去得好慢的，一餵得多，no3會升到過百，要幾日先跌翻做0。
有乜實驗可以試下菌係咪淨食炭而唔駛食其他野呢？

對不起，可能用英文寫得不好，其實是沒有惡意及挑戰成份。更加不是想把他人的說話，當是你說的。

就是因為成果這麼好，如果有個control，即是一樣的器材，一樣的bioload，一樣的喂食，等等。連濾水的石頭都曾在同一缸水內養同等時間的箘。基本上做到只有一個variable (炭) 不同。如果有炭的那個缸比無炭那個效果好，繼 Berlin, Jaubert 之後，姚俊's System 將是我等珊瑚友的一大喜訊。

致於菌係咪淨食炭而唔駛食其他野，只是次要問題。Sulphur、suger water、alcohol都有人試過，就是沒有人証實過用比不用好。

bseeto我知你無惡意的，有惡意的見得多了。
control就係呢個缸的前身，那時是幫人試隻菌(同現在用的菌為同一樽)的效果，個缸只用一堆石(那時多少少石，因為未有炭)來養菌，當時放乾糧及蝦肉碎(只在頭一天放過)來"拗"水，無養魚，測試到第7日時，nh3=0, no2>3.3, no3>110，之後要好幾日先無哂no2,no3。而放了炭後，第7日已可以用來養太后仔，
用左炭，除左餵蝦肉碎，淨餵糧比魚食，no3最高都係20多dd。
而另一個nano tank，石及炭的量多一陪，開缸後要過數星期後才頂得順蝦肉碎。

人生，尚算不錯。
