| It really depands. If there is no severe bad signs of your fish/other creatures, you may let the tank to "mature" by itself without additional water change other than scheduled ones like weekly or bi-weekly water changes. Of course, if there are signs that the creatures could not tolerate the high NO2 level, water change have to be performed quickly to reduce its concentration. Adding of N-bacteria like sera nitrivec can also speed up the completion of the N-cycle. NO3 concentration can be brought down by water changes. If your tank is a FOT, it should be perfectly okay if the level of NO3 is lower than 20 ppm. "Old" fishes which have accustomed to the water condition of your tank will be okay for even up to 50 or even 100ppm of NO3. However, newly introduced fish is likely to suffer illness at these NO3 levels. NO3 concentration could also be brought down by installing a denitrator |
