Posted by: wilsonicwong Posted on: 2004-01-09 12:26 I am not sure whether TDC kills bacteria or not. I had added TDC directly to my FOT. Does it affect the n-cycle? As the description of TDC, it will not kill those bacteria. Is it ture? My FOT was set up for 1 month. Now, NO2 and NO3 are extremely high. What can I do now? Thanks for your help....... P.S. My FOT is about 24"x20"x24". Regards, Wilson

Posted by: wilsonicwong Posted on: 2004-01-09 14:58 Thank you 康仔. To reduce the level of NO2 and NO3, I can change water frequently, right? How much and how often do I need to change? Regards, Wilson

Posted by: 康仔 Posted on: 2004-01-09 15:51 It really depands. If there is no severe bad signs of your fish/other creatures, you may let the tank to "mature" by itself without additional water change other than scheduled ones like weekly or bi-weekly water changes. Of course, if there are signs that the creatures could not tolerate the high NO2 level, water change have to be performed quickly to reduce its concentration. Adding of N-bacteria like sera nitrivec can also speed up the completion of the N-cycle. NO3 concentration can be brought down by water changes. If your tank is a FOT, it should be perfectly okay if the level of NO3 is lower than 20 ppm. "Old" fishes which have accustomed to the water condition of your tank will be okay for even up to 50 or even 100ppm of NO3. However, newly introduced fish is likely to suffer illness at these NO3 levels. NO3 concentration could also be brought down by installing a denitrator :)

Posted by: LC Posted on: 2004-01-09 22:32 I have not used TDC. But from what I have read, N-bacteria will form a biofilm on non-porous surface. The biofilm is very tough and is protective against chemicals. Therefore even if you add antibiotics directly into tank water, N-bacteria will not die. From my own experience, I can say that N-bacteria will not be affected by copper, tetracycline, metronidazole and SB-02 (? contains formalin). It appears that common medicines used by hobbyist will not kill N-bacteria that are contained in the biofilm.
