If yours is a FOT then using Live Sand with 充水層（Plenum) may not be a bad choice provided you don't keep a too many fishes. Details can be found in PH8.4.

I started my 150L FOT tank about 6 months ago with only a power head and skimmer. Currently there are 6 fishes (from 1.5" - 3") and they are doing well. NO2 = 0 and NO3 ~ 20.

Hi AY,
Are you using plenum mentioned in PH8.4? Is it really effective to keep low NO2 and NO3? In the article in PH8.4, it says that we need not change the water in the tank once the tank is mature. Isn't true?

Yes but mine don't have any 鑽沙動物. Ideally, the system is good for larger coral tank but as I said it will work if you don't overload the system by keeping too many fishes because the bio-filter cannot handle it.

Since my tank is still very young and I do 1/3 water change every 1-2 week even when it seems not necessary.

Hi AY,
You can buy some red dragons as they are good 鑽沙動物. How deep is your 充水層? And how deep is the sand of the first layer and the second layer? rWhat do you use to separate the 充水層 with the sand? Do u use PVC board with many holes? I 'm really interested in the use of 充水層?
If it's really effective, maybe I will consider using this method when I start my new tank. Will it be better if we use 假滴漏 / sump with充水層 simultaneously？

Hi Kwok29,

All the Plenum, fine and coarse sand layer are about 1.5" for my tank.

You can find some white plastic board with squre holes in the sign making shop in fish street to separate the Plenum and the fine sand.

If you are considering using live sand system then I don't think using 假滴漏 / sump in addition is necessary, or even defeat the purpose of the live sand system. I don't know whether it will work or not. You may ask other expert.

I have tried the 'red/yellow dragon' before but for some reason they don't live long. I brought a hermit crab yesterday and it really helps to clean up the sand surface.

I am currently a 'yellow belly damsel', 'yellow angel', '3 white spot', 'blue stripes', 'net butterfly', 'doctor fish', 'doctor shrimp' and hermit crab.

Hope you understand the names.

Regarding the number/size of fishes, the following is the reply that I got from LTY of PH8.4 for a 120L FOT:

For length less than 10 cm, 5 fish is limited.
For length larger than 10 cm, 2 fish is maximum.

To Rowdy Tang,

I got the live sand from a beach in Shen Zhen. I think you may get it from some clean beach in Sei Kong and somewhere with clean water source.

Hi AY,
I would like to buy the mesh you mentioned to separate the 3 layers of sand and water. Could you tell me where can buy it? Is it matter whether the material of the mesh is biodegradable or not? Because if it is degradable, the sand will leak through the mesh to the Plenum in future.
