If you don't mind spending a bit more money, I suggest you getting a bottle of Aqua Chargers as your canister may not be sufficient to handle the filtration for your 36" tank. And as a short term solution to solve the shooting high of NO2, I suggest you adding Prime from Seachem which can detoxify ammonia and nitrite. As advised by others, feed less. Fish seldom die of starving.
