in my freshwater tank, there's a big fish (> 2 inch, relative to other fish in my tank), it is heart-shaped parrot fish, previously I suspect it is fierce and kill other fish, so I isolate it in a container at a corner of the tank,

after months (perhaps even a year), it become starved(I feed sparsely), thin, tampered and non-aggressive, so I release it out, after a week or two, it accustomed to the tank environment again, and start moving gravels to clear out a volcano like area, it is it's usual habit, so I don't pay extra attention,

tonite I add more fish and look at the tank attentively, and discovered the big fish has laid egg at the bottom of volcano like area. The suprise is that most fishes find hidden, non-disturbing area to make their nest and lay their eggs,
but the volcano is made just in front side of the tank where I usually walk by.....

The other suprise is that there is no male parrot fish in the tank, (I don't know only 1 female will also lay eggs, like chicken)

I raise about 4-6 baby (< 1 inch) initially, this type of fish is fierce, when there is stress, it will kill others of same type, so at last only the biggest, well-fed one will survive, and today I know it's a matured female....previously I don't think fish will breed in my tank, because I keep many types of fishes, the traffic is busy and there is always a quarrel going on, so I never cater distinguishing their gender, except those fishes that differ obviously between male and female like peacocks

What will happen next? will the mother will eat up the eggs when they cannot hatch or when she get disturbed? (to get back the nutrient?)

I want to know, if there's male in the tank, will the father and mother will take care of the eggs together? when babies hatched and when there's danger(like other fish try to eat the babies), will the father catch and keep the baby in his mouth? Is parrot mouth-breed fish?

do you think I should buy a male of similar size? if the female do not like the new male, will I need to buy more than 1 male to let the female choose?

another photo is whole tank view about a year ago, which is not valid now as I separate the tank in 2 partitions to keep more tempered fishes

before, the fish is very nervous at guarding her eggs and clearing out
gravels and marbles around the nest, tonite the fish seems let the
gravel crowd around her nest a bit. but still guarding hard.

anyone know when fish mature and start laying eggs, will it become a cycle?

(as some HK pro fishkeeper breed nemo (clownfish) in their
tank and the mother is known to lay eggs every 1x days, also for doctor shrimps)

after prolonged service in prison, it's laternal fin (fin at back) it not growing very
good and it's laternal line (側線) is eroded, and it misses some muscle
in the head and nose area, there's even a small hole (head hole
disease, but the fish is a real tough and hardy mother to endure all
these hardship, I pay my deepest respect and salute.

it is a optimistic, cheerful, smiley fish, it got a mouth shape that
looks like it's always smiling

today some of the eggs turn white, that means they died, the fish is still guarding her nest though, see maybe next time it will rebuild the nest and lay next round of eggs

update: when most of the eggs turn white, the mother let the gravels and marbles crord around the eggs, that means she abandoned the eggs/nest, 2-3 days later, the eggs are all gone, don't know whether they are eaten by mother or other fish, still 2 days later, there is a even bigger volcano forming in the tank, I don't know whether the mother is trying to lay the 2nd round of eggs

pls advice whether I should buy a male, if yes, how many and what size?

I know that pro fishkeeper can breead peacocks, discus, and moons at their tank, anybody breed parrots? pls share the experience

I think I should remove the marbles as they make the mother's nest building task very difficult. The marbles keep rolling into the volcano so the mother has to push them away again and again

If you have keep parrots before and have a sand bed, you will know that parrots use much effort to build a volcano, years ago I've seen a parrot tank at fs that have 4-5 inch gravel bed changed to a perfect volcano by parrot.

now I have only 1 inch gravel, can't show you the beauty and greatness of a big volcano (previously I hace 2-3 inch gravel)

and the most important question is, how to distinguish male and female parrots?

and how to breed them? how many male and their size do I need?

If I get a pair and when the fertilized eggs hatch, go I need to separate the parents? (since some parents, when disturbed, will eat the eggs), or the parents are needed for successful hatching as they will take care of the eggs?

when babies are born, do they feed on parents mucus like discus? or do I need to feed them manually? If feeding manually, should I use boiled egg yolk? or brine shrimp? or other things?

do I need to clear out the area so there's only parrots living in 1 partition?
