Hellfreezer,

I am sorry for your lost. But we can all learn and get something out of this lesson - cheap and popular doesn't mean it is easy to keep.

Don't fall into the "impulse buying" trap again. Research and ask question on this board before making any purchase. Below is a very comprehensive FAQ on anemone. A word of warning though, even the easiest anemone (bubble tip) is considered difficult to keep.

http://www.carlosreef.com/AnemoneFAQ.pdf

Other very popular but very difficult to keep species include Alveopora (12¤âÄ_¥Ûªá), Goniopora (24¤âÄ_¥Ûªá), Gorgonian (®ü¬f), Dendronephthya (Âû«a¡H) and Flame Scallop (¤õµK°F). They are all relatively cheap because the fish stores have to sell them before they die.

cool Hey man, you are my idol in Goniopora keeping. But I sincerely doubt that of all the frags you gave to other people, how many of them are still thriving after 6 months.

I know you don't have a water chiller and you are using HQI, do you skim? I ran across some un-published work on Goniopora by an Australian post-grad Meredith Peach. She didn't finish the work becasue she switched to study sharks.

Anyway, she did some gut content analysis and showed that Goniopora probably eats phytoplanktons and tiny non-crustacean planktons. She also shows that photosynthetic rate of the symbiotic zooxanthellae DROPS when Goniopora is deprived of food. This vicious cycle often kills the animal.

From my casual observation, most people who keep Goniopora successfully use refugium, use very weak skimmers or do not skim at all. That's why I ask whether you skim.

I suspect that your success is because, apart from cutting them, you provide enough food to them.

But I am not a researcher, I doubt we can arrive at any concrete idea soon.

Dear bseeto ,

I finally got time to read through your link and the article provides very in depth information. Thanks! However, this link http://www.bestfish.com/saltg.html provide a different point of view on anemone--carpet. It says carpet has tolerant of various water conditions and not commonly affected by hard to treat diseases. This is why I got trapped!!!! angry

Moreover, I found an article, though, it was old (http://www.reefs.org/library/talklog/r_king_062500.html; published in 2K), it does say cutting can speed up the growth of coral, espeically soft coral. I guess the cutting method of ¤Û¤§²×·¥¯u«À«T should work. I also believe the amount of phytoplanktons and tiny non-crustacean planktons in the tank play very important role in supporting the growth of coral.

I will study more, and if I find anything good, I will post it here for your reference.

cheers,
hellfreezer

Dear Hellfreezer,

I am not sure about the link, it says those anemones are filter feeders. I don't know how they can filter feed without any filtering apparatus.

Years ago, people thought the stickiness of their tentacles were used to stick small particles for food. With the help of microscope, we know that those stickiness comes from stinging cells used in capturing larger animals. I am not sure when microscope was invented. A hundred years ago?

The link is now telling us something that was proven wrong a hundred years ago!

And it also says carpet can tolerate variour water conditions, hmmm...

It might be correct, you know, I have no experience in carpet anemone to say otherwise.
