Hello from a new fish friend!

I have just found this site after searching all over and lots of English information, but it does not help me in HK; for the HK information almost all I can find is in Chinese, which I cannot read, so please bear with me, okay?

I am planning to have a new 80G/320L tank and wondering, what about the water quality in HK? Is it worth it to buy a RO/DI filter, and if so, where is the best place?

Also, is there such a way / piece of equpment to automatically fill up the tank / sump to replace the evaporated water?

hi cwoo,
   I try my best to describe in english, as my english is not so good.
   About HK water quality, because of SARS, so hk gov add more chlorine in the water. But the current water have many others trace element and some of this will cause algae growth. So if you directly put the fresh water into the main tank. There will have problem too.
    I have checked that my water :
1. PH = 8.6-8.8
2. NO3 = 0.3mg
3. have P

   Others I have not checked, but for your reference PH and NO3 will cause the algae growth. Also, in HK, many friends report that their water quality report is not the same. Some NO3 is more than 50mg.

   So, I suggest add DI to filter the fresh water. The DI you can found the cheapest cost in Hong Kong is API TAP WATER FILTER. In fish street only $300 HKD. (http://www.ezreef.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=34&products_id=331)

About auto replace the water, there have many different way to do. Some of it is DIY. You can refer the following link for your reference, most of these are in chinese, but try to understand the method by photo.

Thanks alot for the useful info franng, definitely your english is better than my chinese!

I think the sites are very useful even from just the pictures, and I also keep searching for more ideas on the web, so far I think DIY is definitely an option.

Do you thnk that DI is enough and RO is not required? I am planning to have both reef and fish, and prefer to have no problems (like algae!) so if it is required, I will plan to purchase a RO/DI from overseas and install it myself.

我都係用API TAP WATER FILTER., 但係缸裏面ph得7.7, 要加 ph, 因用風扇, 蒸發得幾勁, 每日加水1-1.5l, ph 長期維持7.7, 有時8.0, 不過好小, 已經每日加ph,唔知點算好?

其實用佢本來係徐no3同po4, 因為缸內no3好高, 好多紅苔, 用0左大概1-2months, 有明顯唔同, 紅苔冇0左, 0的生物開得幾好, 不過要注意ph, 因過濾個0的水會底過8.0, 要加ph, 而家加水同補充蒸氣水都係用佢, 可以一試, 唔係好貴

係, 因為API TAP WATER FILTER, 會過濾D重金屬同化合鹽.
因此過濾後PH會低以及要補充電解質. (聽說電解質好重要, 主要是令魚表面薄膜更加健康).
我都會用來補充水份. 但你可以試下加少少鹽. 再睇下PH會唔會高番D. (唔需要加到1.022, 少少就夠).
同埋睇下你補充得多唔多. 如多不如當換水, 我指加鹽.

不過如要根治呢個問題. 我覺得加鈣反應會好D.
或者試下加完水後加多少少鈣水. 睇下PH會唔會高番.

There have some reef expert to explain why DI is more efficiency than RO
and it is english too.
