Large Angelfish types generally last a long time, especially french, grey, blue mask + many others. I even had Regal before and it ate well before ich claimed her life. I now have a majestic (馬鞍 is >300 days) and she was badly beaten when first introduced but after several days was chasing food. I feel the keys are 1) keep few fishes; or 2) keep a lot of fishes so they have no clear target to attack. Juv emperior (藍圈仔) needs very peaceful environment and try not to stir the sand. As for small angelfishes, I also feel that they are not difficult to feed as I had flame before and ate like pig. I have failed 3 coral beauty (石美人) before but now I have one also eating like a pig (5 meals a day). The only difference is that now I have a play tank with many LR and crevices so the surving one could feel comfortable when first introduced. Small angelfishes are easy to keep so long you have few tankmates to contest with them and many places to hide. Singapore angelfish (天皇仙) is definitely difficult to keep - Sure ! As for butterfly fishes, I think many of us knows there are several that are almost impossible for aquarium even reef tank. But I had several butterfly fishes that I was lucky to keep them for almost 2 years (網蝶, 月眉蝶, 雙印 etc). My feeling is that most fishes are not picky on food, just that they often are so uncomfortable with the congested conditions of domestic aquarium. Sudden change in water condition is another killer, transportation, method of catching all taking toll on their chances of survival. Similarly, only around 1 in every 10 birds caught survive their way to overseas countries (where we could buy them in the market). Surpising isn't it ? |
