Cleaner fishes are wildly know to be very difficult to keep in aquarium. It is difficult because they don't rely feeding on passing particles at sea, but feed on parasites found on the other fishes. Very few hobbyists have success with this fish. Basically there are generally two reasons of success with keeping a cleaner fish; 1. the tank has a large number of larger fishes; or 2. the cleaner fish is one of the rare member that would automatically take feeds. The chance of number 2 happening is very slim, it all depends of luck but is only one in the many. The problem with marine shops in HK is that they don’t feed the fishes for you to see. You have no way to tell which belongs to that number 2 category. Even with a lot of large fishes in the tank, it is still quite impossible to ensure a constant supply of parasites or body debris for the cleaner fish to feed on. So at the end of the day, the requirement of number 2 prevails. Most hobbyists would find that upon releasing the cleaner wrasse to the tank, she will dive straight into the sand bed and disappear. I have had one success with this cleaner fish only because it belonged to category 2 type that it would grasp some brine shrimp. But I soon discovered problem with a cleaner fish if your tank is like the one I had (150L). At first the other fishes are so happy because they see a cleaner around. After a day or so the problem started to surface. Because the members are limited in the tank, the cleaner bump into the same patient repeatedly. When the patient didn’t need service, the cleaner fish would still insist on providing cleaning service. Sometimes, it may even rip a part of the patient and causes wound and torn fins. Just imagine if there is an enemy that would rip your skin every time he sees you, but you have to meet him at every corner your turn. No matter how much you feed her the cleaner kept coming back for more because that’s her duty. If you want to see healthy cleaner fishes, there are few in the large aquarium at Ocean Park and they are fat and big. Amazingly, they are comparatively larger than their cousins in the wild. Perhaps they don’t have predation threat. In reality, both cleaner shrimp and cleaner fish are very limited in really combating diseases (ick for instant) in tank. They are there mainly for display to see how fishes and cleaners interact. |
