for my experience, no sand is easy to keep and maintain water quailty and cleaning of the tank... no need to wash sand ma...provided you either has a sump or a effecctive filter with sufficient biological filitration..
while with sand you need to add once or 1 and a half inch for decoration and also is better for fish keeping...it look more natural for you and them , but you have to suck or move the surface debris of them regularly for filtration or you can use a pump to gently blow the sand bed...

Put some shrimp too eat the debris and crab.... PS. May be work.
