My own experience.
My son always requests to buy stuff, like candy or slack, when we shop in supermarket. Somtimes I allow, somtimes I refuse. The most important is that we shall tell him the reason and convince him not to buy. Sometimes we let him take only one of his favorites, he must choose only one himself. I think it's a good chance to train his mind.

The problem of the father in the ad. is that he just thrown the bag away without saying a word. The child did not understand, felt the father was hurting him. Therefore emotionally did crazy things to resist his father.
