YC, I think even the tank is mature, by adding the bacteria could do more good than harm because, some bacteria might be dying if using UV in the filtration system. I use the glass tube type as per Dino discription and also the PS-Bio, but the PS-Bio do create lots of brown alge. | |

In fact I think that even the tank is brand new, adding N-bacteria is not necessary. N-bacteria are present in nature. They will colonize all the available surfaces inside your tank in time, no matter you like it or not. Say, within 8 weeks, I am pretty sure that there should be enough N-bacteria inside a new tank. I do not find any report on bacteria products that can speed up the N-cycle of a tank. I have not used any bacteria products and cannot comment on their usefulness that I really doubt. As you know, the N-bacteria convert organic matters into nitrates. I read from other messages that many hobbyists use various tests to monitor the level of NH3, NO2, NO3, Ca, kH, pH, copper and many others. But when their fish are sick, they strongly resist to use medication. Test kits are not accurate but many hobbyists are satisfied with an apparently normal result. A sick fish is a real problem but many hobbyists hope that it can recover by itself. The money spent on test kits could be more effectively spent on medication. For the case of UV, it only kills those bacteria floating in the water by-passing the UV tube. N-bacteria must attach to hard surface to be functioning well, where UV is inaccessible. | |

For your example, overfeeding fish with food leaving in the tank and then add bacteria to convert them into nitrate is not a really good approach. I think one should not overfeed fish primarily. There are some products in the hobby that I think are not really useful. Some test kits and bacteria products are just some examples. | |

Also, I haven't said that I have overfeeded, For FOT, its not easy to ensure no overfeeding will not occur. Even in RT, overfeeding will still have chance to occur, how can you ensure none of your feeded food will enter the gap of the live stone and which cannot be ate by the fishes, crabs or shrimps?? I also agree that there are many many methods to achieve to the goal. But for me, I have achieved to the goal by the bacteria, I think its important for me, and I'm absolutely think that it is useful. That is. | |

I bet that your tank will maintain at its current good shape even you stop adding further bacteria to your tank. What I really worry is that the bacteria solution is not pure bacteria. As you know, bacteria need oxygen and nutrients to maintain their lives. I am not sure how long the solution can keep the bacteria alive in that little bottle, especially when that bottle has been kept on the shelf for an extended period of time. The bacteria inside may have consumed all the nutrients and died already. Then one is pouring dead bodies of bacteria together with preservatives and other unknown nutrients into the tank. It is not desirable at all I consider myself a beginner in this hobby. I have learnt a lot from reading messages of other experienced hobbyists I the forum. :) | |

So, I will only bought the smallest bottle size of bacteria and choose the newly one to avoid this. Also, one thing is that when u open the bottle, its smelly, then there must be many many dead bacteria inside. Oppositely, when there is no smell, that means not much dead percentage. Besides, I think your FOT is good, especially the purple moon, is it still in good condition ?? | |

The reason is the over feeding do occurs sometimes due to introducing new fishes. As you all knew new fish are often difficult to "open mouth". Therefore, constantly feeding and changing the type of food is necessary. All this food stuff causing pollution to water and when it happened, I often adding bacteria immediately after feeding. Just trying to break out the wasted food. | |
