No matter how many times you do water change, if there's NO3 in tap water already, it's not going to help. Have you thought of using a water filter like RO/DI to filter water first? Though it will take time to produce denitrifying bacteria, it's better to have a DSB in your tank, calcium sand can help to buffer pH a bit. SeaGrass can help, but if your fish come down with Ich, you need to lower salinity and add copper, that will kill the SeaGrass. | |

Posted by: alextkk Posted on: 2002-08-10 10:53 Your tap water may already contain a high level of NO3. I have tested with the tap water of my home and found that it contains 50mg/l of NO3. If it is your case, it makes no use to lower your NO3 level by water change using the direct tap water. You may need a DI/RO to filter the water first. You may also try the following ways to lower the NO3 level : 1. Use AZ-NO3 if you have a skimmer. 2. Put Resin or Activated Carbon containing Resin into your filter to absorb NO3 as well as NH3 & NO2. The product claims that it will not release NO3 back to the water even if it is saturated. I have done the test by filtering the tap water using the activated carbon containing resin and the NO3 level drop from 50mg/L to 25mg/L. I think that it is the cheapest way to lower NO3 level in a short period. | |

Posted by: paulus Posted on: 2002-08-12 13:15 Try to use a micro algae scrubber, concentrate on micro algae, they consume NO3 as their food source, but your main tank has to have enough reef janitor to prevent spread into the main tank. Only micro algae consume NO3 efficently, normal sea weed only consume water nutrient, that's why when your NO3 is high, the first thing to show is a boom of brown, hair algae. | |

Albert Lee, Some one told me that if your NO3 level is already very high, it will kill the algae instead. Imagine you put a lot of fertilizer in your plant, far too much, it will kill them, right? So, you may need to do some water change to keep NO3 down to acceptable level first b4 you can plant the algae. Moreover, it won't help a lot, as I was told. | |
