Posted by: Leong Posted on: 2002-07-07 10:34 其實我想問下大家.....點解大家好似好少談及飼養蝶魚的呢?? 是不是因為其十分難飼養?? 又或是因為他們的習性所致?? |

Posted by: wwlworld Posted on: 2002-07-07 11:33 Generally butterfly fishes are not hard to keep and this applies to many species. Of course there are those impossible to keep like 天皇蝶, 冬瓜 etc. General ones (人字,Philippines月眉,網蝶,雙印) cost around HK$30 - $60 each in Mongkok. If I was to purchase one, I would avoid common self-service tank. On the other hand, some exhotic deep sea butterfly fishes could be found in shops occasionally. Butterfly fishes are generally greedy meaning that they will accustom to all kinds of food fed to them. They are not picky eater. They are very active in tank and always run about so they often lead other fishes out of hiding. Generally butteflyfishes turn darkish color when they are frightened or when they are angered. I found that keeping more than 1" of butterfly in every 30L of tank volume will generate a lot of heat (confrontation). I would avoid two sizes of butterfly fish: Smaller than 1.5" juvenille - naturally they feeds mainly on algae, plankton, polys Larger than 3.5" adult - these butterflies generally have formed their natural pair in the wild. When diving, one would often see them in pair, they really look lonely in tank on their own. Picture of a natural pair in the wild |

Posted by: nebula Posted on: 2002-07-07 17:32 各位魚友: 我想因為大多蝶魚都不適合reef tank........:P會食珊瑚ga! 而且下列蝶魚都出名難養....eg 橙風車, 排骨, 黑馬利.....等等。 平的又多數來自賓記。我自己養過"不不", "月光", "白眉".....好地地都不明不白謝老四。所以我就唔會揀law:O)。 |

Posted by: wwlworld Posted on: 2002-07-08 08:56 A veteran in this hobby has posted interesting pictures of his butterfly fishes. Please see http://www.hk-fish.com/cgi-bin/ikonboard//topic.cgi?forum=1&topic=1589 (Pasted my comments from that post) Butterflies are really beautiful. They glide across the water. They look very funny when in a rush where their tail will swing rapidly to the left and to the right repeatedly. They are active but also intelligent cause they would readily react to human movement Common species like this long nose could be found at 120 feet below surface. But usually they don't venture that far down but stay at the top 60 feet. Nevertheless, few butterflies generally don't live much further below 120 feet because of the availability of food (as they generally rely on polys sponge etc). Dim light environment don't provide abandon food of those kinds. But few are often living at below 80/100 feet and rarely seen at the top 60 feet and often they are referred to as deep water butterflies. Although common, these diamond pattern butterflies are often seen at 60 feet & below. The following pictures are taken at shallow water Again, long nose has appeared in the shallow too! Another one of the few appearance and hard to keep butterfly fish. A natural partnership One interesting aspect of butterfly fishes that I have only found lately. Before I thought butterfly fishes only pair off at 4 inches or above, but recently I have seen two butterfly fishes forming partnership when they were only 2.5 to 3" long. Large butterflies are often seen in pair in the wild. When fishermen catch a large butterfly fish they would often catch the other one too. Sometimes in Mongkok I would spot, what I believe, to be a natural pair. Because from observation, the other butterfly fish would seems to react to some of the actions of the first (and not in a hostile manner). Then I would wish the coming buyer would buy both. Of course, I believe it is rather over wishful. And juvenilles are often in school |
